Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year ! !
Let's start this year off on the right foot - here are things we as a team need to improve on:
1. Let's pat your teammates on the back when they do something good in the water.
2. Let's encourage our teammates when they are down, when they are not working as hard as they should be working.
3. Let's show team spirit when we play - (something like Edwin does at each and every practice).
4. Let's pay dues on time - beginning this year you are late, you don't workout!!
Club: On Thursday we are starting off with 20 sprints - if you bring in a type written New Year's Resolution you get to skip 15 of the 20 sprints. Your resolution should be the one most important thing you need to work on for Water Polo.
Be Safe!!!!!

Parka's

Does anyone want to order Parka's? The price range is: $125 - 155.00. I know we won't be able to get in time for xmas. Please respond to this blog if you would like to order one.... If we have more than 12 parkas it will be cheaper. The XXL cost more. You can also get short parkas.

Blood Bath Game

NBC will air an interview about the Blood Bath Game in 1956 tomorrow Wed Dev 6th at 4 pm (short slot) and at 5 pm (longer slot). It's a small world: My (Sandy) 1st water polo coach was Nick Martin (he changed his name) - Nick was the team captain from Hungary, his entire Olympic team played Russia for the Gold Medal - this was during the time Russia took over Hungary so the game meant so much to Hungary. After the game all the players defected! In 1977 Jeno Ats also a member of this Olympic team was the Executive Director for Water Polo Canada. Jeno invited my club team from Commerce to play in an International tournament for women. When we came home the City Council from Commerce asked me to invite teams from around the world and the City would host every team. This is how Women's Water Polo got started - which is now an Olympic Sport. Now Jeno lives in Las Vegas and Adam's mom friend is Tom from ABC News and did a story on the 50th anniversity of this Blood Bath! Small World huh?

And again, thanks for volunteering on behalf of OUR team.

Mark's 4th Operation

Mark had his 4th operation late this afternoon - as you know you cannot eat or drink before surgery - He was begging for food (guess it is a good sign he is eating again). Everything went great - in fact they cover (skin graft) his entire leg, foot - everything!!!!

I think he will be OK to have visitors again Sunday.... if you want to bring him anything bring him bottle water, a six pack! (his mom has been bring him 2-3 bottles everyday) - no flowers! Again don't ask him how the accident happened... make sure while you are there he is doing his exercise - at least working his arms if he can't move his leg yet!!! Room 443

Whitney Pool - Closed - Sat MGP

The pool closed today (Thur) because of a gas leak, they had to shut the gas off and fix the leak. For those came - the little guys did some dryland and we talked about rules. The older players we talked about how much everyone has improved - begin to set goals of attendance - playing water polo in college - Older boys and girls going to JO's.

Just got a call today (Friday) they can't fix the leak till Tuesday or Wed - so we are back at the Multi Gen Pool:
Sat: 1-2:30 pm Club
2-4 pm Masters

Tuesday MGP Everyone 6:30-8 pm

Will let you know about Thursday workout location.

By request we will not workout on Oct 31st - it is Nevada Day and Candy Day!!

Drivers for the LV Marathon

Rob Wills has made contact with the Las Vegas Marathon and they have agreed to let our team (Club and Masters) drive all 30 trucks. This is going to be a great fund raiser for the team - we will make $3,000.00 for one day's work. Each driver will drive a U-Haul truck to a watering/aid stationing along the running route. The truck will be loaded for you and unloaded by the group of people working each watering/aid station. You and your partner will begin at 3-4 am and finish when all the runners have pasted your station and return your truck. More info will following - what you need to do now is:

1. Fill out the drivers form - RETURN TO ROB OR SANDY BY SATURDAY OCT. 14TH

University of Arizona Tournament

Players: Rob & Matt Goalies - Vaune, Magee,Brad, Drew, Tony, Matt Jr., Edwin, Thor, Robert, Jenny & Foley.

Results: Friday night we played against University of Arizona "B" 16 -4 won
Sat am - Clayton University 16-11 lost
pm - University of Arizona "A: won by 1 goal
Sun am - Chawp's for 5th place: won by 2 goals

Things we need to work on:
1. We all need more conditioning - our team is now at a higher level of skill, game knowledge and our conditioning needs to catch up to our skill and knowledge to reach the next level. So our conditioning will be increase on Monday's and Wednesday!!
2. Work on the end of the game when we need a goal and when we need to control the ball.

I thought we played OK in all but the lost to Clayton - poor defense (anytime a team can score 16 goals is pretty bad). With that lost the best we could do was 5th - which we placed because Clayton the best team in the tournament beat us. The Chawps and Monsoon team joined during the tournament and ended up playing Clayton - losing by 7 goals..... so if the seeding were different we could have easily been the 2nd best team.

We did miss: Jacint, Roger and Joe - speed!!!!!!! esp in that 30 meter pool.

Mark's Classroom

Today 10/5, Tere Ma came to the hospital to explain in layman's terms to Mark, Mary and I so we could understand what happened to Mark's leg and foot. You could see the stress leave Mark and Mary when their questions were answered - 30 days without really knowing what happened was stressful. Tere also told him the three major points for a quick recovery:

1. Attitude - be positive - take it one day at a time - even when/if he has a bad day find something positive about the day or situation.

2. PT and OT is very important for his recovery (even more important then his food intake). Mark has to do his exercises and do them all the time!!! Mark's history tells me this is going to be the hardest part for him.. he does not understand the difference between good pain (getting stronger) - bad pain (hurting the injury). History also tells me Mark will work really hard for a few days/weeks then slack off for a few days/weeks. His PT and OT will work him and we will stay on top of this too.

3. Support - family, friends - being there for Mark!!!! This can come in forms of - emails - cards - visits when he can have visitors. There have been several players/parents asking if there is anything the team can do for Mark? Right now send him emails: mark2polo@aol.com or send him cards/notes/letters at:

Mark St. John
7050 Ovation Way
Las Vegas NV 89119

In no time Mark will be back on the deck coaching the club players - and back in the water tooling and schooling everyone at 2 meters.

Mark - Mentally Tough

Before I tell you what happened today you have to understand the following: Mark has to take two steps forward, then one step back to go to the next two steps forward. Today in Mark's mind it was the one step backward because he won't be able to get up from bed for about 5 days. But with this step Mark now has skin cover the top of his thigh, this is great for his road to recovery.

Mark had the operation and everything went fine!!!!! The Doctors took a thin layer from his left leg (good leg) and put it over the open wound. They also cleaned up the top lower leg and bottom lower leg of any infection. Mark was in good spirits after the operation - he wanted water since he did not eat or drink anything for 17 hours. It was a long but good day!!

Mark - Operation Saturday

Mark is having another operation to remove the infection from his leg. The operation will take place today, Saturday September 30th, at 11:00 am.

Mark is getting up from bed, sitting in a chair for a few hours a day, he is also walking around his room with the help of his PT's and walker. The really great news is he is eating again - not to what he use to eat (I don't think they have enough food in the hospital for that) - with Mark eating again the healing will begin.

Club - Fallbrook

Just got the date for the Fallbrook Tournament: Jan 27-28, 2007 - mark it down. We will take a boys team (with our older girls) and a younger team.

More info will follow - Sandy

Club - Boys - Junior Olympics

If you have the time and interest please let me know.

Thanks Sandy

Sorry - No Visitors

Mark just called and told me he has an infection and can't have visitors. They found some type of infection on his leg and only doctors/nurses can go in and they have to wear the mask, gown, head cap, booties etc.

Will let you know when it is OK to visit.... Sandy

Mark - Visitors OK

Mark is up to having visitors, it will be best if you text Mark before you come to visit in case he is either sleeping or his dressing is being changed - in which case he can't have visitors. Text him at the following #: 477-5529. If there is no answer he is sleeping or busy.

Mark is at UMC in the burn unit - 6th floor. Room 610. Best to come down Charleston, make a right turn on
Tonopa (Sav-On on the corner), park in the parking lot. Walk to Adult Emergency doors (2nd set of doors), walk down the hall, make a right, walk down the hall, make another right to the elevators, go to the 6th floor. Ask the person at the front you are there to see Mark St. John room 610. You have to wash your hands before you enter the ward.

There is a family room next to Mark's room you can wait in if he has more than 2 visitors at a time, or if he is busy with the doctors or nurses. No flowers or fruits are allowed.

MARK - OPERATION TUESDAY

Mark is having another operation today at 10:00 am - they are going in to take a look at what exactly they need to do. They may close the wound (which would be great news) or they may have to leave it open for a while longer. He is still out of it - talking to you - then he is sleeping the next second.

If you want to send cards - send to:

Mark St. John

Will keep you posted - Sandy

Mark

They are going to operate on Mark again - this time to check what the condition of his leg, to find out what the next step will be..... skin graft. Mark St. John - In Hospital

Mark was in an accident at work - he is OK now!! One of those big John Deer rig ran him over and crushed his foot and took part of his skin off his thigh. He underwent reconstructive surgery and is presently in the burn unit at UMC. He will be at the hospital for at least 10 days to 3 weeks. Right now he should not have visitors right now because of the possibility of infection. He is going to be scheduled for another surgery when he is strong enough.

Right now the best thing to do is to email him (don't text or call his cell) at: mark2polo@aol.com

More information will follow - Sandy

Lifting Program

I have asked Jason Roe to meet with the following players to design a lifting program for each one of you. Jason know how I feel about lifting too much too soon, he understands the concept of light weights with lots of reps...etc...etc.

I would like the following players to begin lifting when we start back up Sept 12th.
Eric - Baby - Jake - Alex - Sarah - Eliz - Matt - Jeff - Ryan (if you are not on one for swimming) Andrew, Elliott, David, Jill, Ben and Place.

Jason is going to meet with all of you at one time and set a special program for each of you depending on age and body type. Jason will go thru the proper way to lift, what you are working and why. Jason will meet with you the 2nd time soon after you begin to double check if you are doing it correctly. Jason will meet with you after 3-5 weeks after to adjust your program.

Jason is doing this as a favor to me - and I would like each of you to get him some type of gift certificate. We will set up the date when we come back from our break.

Proud!!!!

After seeing what other teams are like - I am really proud of our team - Masters and Club!!! Thank You

If you saw the final Masters game you understand what I am talking about: Chawps thought they could do no wrong - never made a mistake - every call against them was a bad call they knew it all and no one knew the game better then all of them - they had no respect for any of the teams they played, had no respect for any of the ref's - they have no respect for the game we all love "Water Polo" what a shame!! So I thank all of you for not being like that and if you ever become one of them you know where the door is at!!

Recap of the games:

TVH Purple: Good Job: the teams effort - not giving!! Wanting to learn new skills, wanting to understand the game. Improvement with each game. Things to Work On: Seeing the entire game - knowing where the ball is at and reacting to the situation. Some of you need to listen and learn and not take things so personal.

TVH Black: Great team play! Good positive energy in the water! Things To Work On: Conditioning

TVH 16's: Good Job: State Champs!! Nevada State Champs beating Reno in both games!! Things To Work On:
everyone needs to swim on their own - it is going to be important your conditioning and speed swimming begin to improve - as you get older and you want to stay par or get better then rest of the players you need to swim on your own!!! After the Reno tournament the older club players will be put on a weight training program.

TVH 12's: Commerce is a well coached team understanding the ins and outs of the game and they have been playing for 3-4 years and some of you are able to stay with them and some are just as good and better then most of the Commerce players. Things to Work On: Giving your all at workouts - Listening - Doing what you are told to do and asking questions when you don't understand!!

Great Job working the desk - setting up - cleaning up - working the concession stand!!

Thanks Again - Your Proud Coach!!!

Parents - Masters

It is about that time to again remind parents and masters it is the coaches job to coach!!! Please read the attached!!

Team Vegas/Henderson Water PoloParent Code of Conduct
In order for our club to compete successfully at the highest level, it is essential to recognize that participation in the Team Vegas/Henderson is a commitment being made by entire families, not just players. Therefore, it is important that we outline our expectations for parents as well as players.

Please read the following guidelines that we expect our parents to follow.

Parents are allowed to attend practices and encouraged to attend games. However, parents are expected to stay away from the side of the pool and away from the coaches during practices and games. Parents should support the players on our teams and refrain from making disparaging remarks about or directed at any of our players, coaches, opponents, or officials. Parents must avoid any physical or verbal confrontations with the parents, coaches, and players of our club or our opponents or with the officials. Parents are not coaches; the players should receive their directions only from the coaching staff on the pool deck, not from parents in the stands. The coaching staff is giving directions which will enhance the entire team (not just one child). Parents cheer for the team/players and don’t yell out any directions.Parents are expected to have rides available for their children at the time that practices and games are scheduled. Parents need to understand that part of the mission of the coaches is to help the players develop into mature, responsible young men and women. Therefore, it is the responsibility of players to communicate directly with coaches when issues arise. Decisions about playing time, travel teams, and all other water polo related matters are made exclusively by the coaching staff and are not open to debate, discussion, or negotiation with parents. A player should feel free to discuss his/her status with the coaches at an appropriate time. Parents are expected to get their children to all practices and games on time. If you cannot be on time, be early! No player will be allowed to participate in any practice or game unless he/she is registered with the club. All club dues must be paid in full in order for a player to be allowed to enter the water.

Dues

It is mid month and there are still players who have not paid dues - I am not going to list the 18 players from Masters who have not paid - but I am thinking about collecting dues quarterly instead of hunting down players every month. This is not fun chasing players I am a coach not a bill collector!!!!!!

Club I will be checking who has paid this month - those who have not bring goggles to the workouts next week.

Murrieta Results

Fun Fun Weekend in the Sun!!! Great Games!!! Awesome Improvement!!! Fun - what more can we ask for?

Shannon, Elizabeth, Jenny, Chandler, Vaune, Elis Brooks, Alex played on Sat along with a few former National Team Players (over 40) played with Team Vegas. The 1st game was pretty easy, we won playing a good pressing defense. The 2nd game was very close with our Hall of Famer Vaune doing some fancy work at two meters. Vaune was playing with players she played with on the National Team and they did not lose the connection - they knew where to put the ball, when to put the ball at two meters, it was really nice to. The score was very close but with 7 second the ball was given to Vaune at set it took Vaune about 3 seconds with the ball to work her magic and scored the winning goal.

The third game was also very close but we ran out of gas in their 3rd game of the day... and lost by 1 goal. After the games the team went to lunch together and our players got to talk to the former national team players - listen to some old funny stories.

The men also did a great job - like the women's game our 1st game was pretty easy again with a pressing defense. Our 2nd game was a pick up game after a team did not show up - this was a close game (but knowing the next game was against the best team in the tournament we played the starters in short spans of time) . We beat the team by 1 goals. We played the very next game (5 min rest) against the #1 seeded team, we started off with great defense and we up 6 - 2. Then our defense broke down and it was all down hill from there. Miramar scored the next 4 goals and went up by 1.... then it was back and forth, at one point they were up by 4 goals, Joe made some great shots after begin fouled and they beat us by 2 goals 14-12. Our last game we played our defensive game plan and the other team was only able to score 1 goal. There was improvement by all.

I can not remember when I have had more fun coaching then this past weekend!! Thank You Team!!!

Kearns - Revisited

After reading my last post about Kearns, I did not write about some of our players in a positive way. The 18 & Under player I just listed their names but in fact: Sarah took several strides to improve her game, she was very intense which made her counter attacks awesome and made her defense 110% more agressive. Alex general knowledge of the game improved and showed in every area of the game. Eric's determination was very focused which lead to Eric playing a good game on both ends of the pool. Elliott's leadership and intensity is always a welcome presents with our team.

Jeff's comment in the last post may not be read as a positive comment but to his teammates and coach we were proud of Jeff for being able to play in the field the entire Gold Medal Game after being sick the weekend. Jeff also went in to set at two meters, made great passes out and tooks some well timed shots from two meters which after setting two meters means having to swim all the way back to the other end. Jeff, Great team work!!!

I looked at the video Matt Sr took - at the end of the game Andrew got his 3rd major with 4 seconds left in the game - after reviewing Andrew's action that was such a smart kick out - Andrew interfered with the free throw because he was going to shoot the ball and with only 4 seconds left in the game they could not get off another shot.

Kearns - Results

With exactly 7 players our 16 & unders boys (and 1 girl) won the 9th Annual Kearns Invitational Water Polo Tournametnt:

Round Robin:

Game 1: TVH 13 vs Colorado O
Game 2: TVH 17 vs Hunter 2
Game 3: TVH 6 vs Kearns 6
Game 4: TVH 10 vs New Mexico 2

Gold Medal Game: TVH vs Kearns

Last year Kearns beat TVH by a score of 9-4 - eight months later TVH beats Kearns by a score of 9-6. It was scary when Elizabeth got her 2nd major foul mid way in the 3rd quarter (1 more and we would have to play a man down - and David our goalie was playing to awesome to even think of switching him in the field). The team really pulled together and took it upon themselves to make sure Elizabeth would not be put in a position to get her 3rd major foul. TVH scored the 1st goal and never looked back. Like I said before David played great! Matt made some awesome outside shots! Jake as usually was up on counters! Andrew was our key defensive player! Elizabeth played well under a stressful (to say the least) situation!!!!!!!!! Jeff sucked it up and played the entire game without asking to go into the goal for rest - big step for Jeff!!!! Who am I missing? Oh yeah Ryan our hero!! Ryan was in the hospital on Monday - Tuesday and part of Wednesday with heat stroke. Ryan's dad (Jeffrey) drove Ryan up on Thursday night and got into Kearns at 1 am and played 9 games (5 of which he did not get a sub) - WOW!!! And to top this off he played great - in fact some of his best water polo!! Really proud of this team!!! We entered in the 15 & under division at the last min - sure glad we did.

We also entered in the 18 & under Boys division - considering we had 3 femals all under 17 years, 5 boys 14 years old, 3 boys 16 years and two boys 17 years old we did pretty good!!! We placed 6th - but more important the players as individuals and as a team took big steps into the next level of play!! This team was made up of the 7 players above and: Alex, Sarah, Erik and Elliott.

A big thanks to Matt Sr and Margie for driving up the kids and helping me watch over the players!!

CHAWPS - Results

The older club players were in California this weekend: CHAWPS 16/18 Boys Tournament. The combined the tournament with 16 and 18 & Under teams (two of the 18 & Under teams pulled out at the last min). So we played against one 16 & under team, which was our 1st game. San Diego 16's had an awesome goalie - he stopped close to 12-16 of our shots (at least 8 of those shots should have gone in)... it was a close game from start to finish. In the fourth quarter with less than 1:30 left we score to go ahead by one goal. We played great defense and San Diego was not even allowed a shot at our goal. Team Vegas/Henderson won!! David our goalie had an awesome game (did not turn his head once) some great passes out and some nice saves.

With the win under our belt we could do no worst than 4th place. Our next game was against San Diego 18 years old - they was much strong, fast, and more experienced then our team. We gave them a good game, we made them play hard and more important we learn from our mistakes. We lost by 5 or 6 goals.

Our last game was for 3rd or 4th place - According to the schedule we were to play Santaigo 16's but he put in his 18's.... did not tell the players before the game. They were up most of the game, again we did not put away our shots. In the fourth quarter we tied them late in the game and then went ahead by one goal.

After this tournament we have so much to work on: Seeing the entire game, communication, 6 on 5, and getting to the next level. These will be our goals for Kearns next week.

-I would like to have 3 divisions: Masters - 16 & under boys - 12 & unders
-Our entire team along with playing would be expected to help work the tables, selling T-shirts/food items.
-If all goes well we could raise enough money to buy shot clocks.

-Feb 23rd, 24th, 25th (Friday - Saturday - Sunday)

The City has been great to us - and their staff is awesome!! I know that staff would love for you to email their boss and let her know what a great job they are doing. Master Nationals

Great job! Last year we got our butts kicked - this year we did 110% better!!! Few interesting facts:

1. did you know CHAWPS the team that tied us in the last few seconds finished in second place?
2. did you know the team that beat us in the last few second in the 40's got 4th.
3. comment of the tournament: here's the situation: Magee chases the goalie (which was OK because there were on seconds left in the quarter, Magee somehow gets the ball from the goalie and makes a backhand - Jenny, Dave and I think Brad are swimming back on defense with their man - they do not know Magee scored - Sandy says "Don't you know where the ball is at?" Dave comes back with "Sandy - Defense, Defense, Defense" Got me Dave!!!
4. our last game for the 20's the final word was "Finally" Finally we won one of the close games!! We won with 1 second left in the game!!!
5. sorry Paul could not stay the entire tournament - hope your girlfriend is better.
6. sure missed foley and carlos on sat and sunday - there went our offense but the team held together and played great.

Here is what I learned from this tournament:
-I need to condition everyone with swim sets - scrimmages did not do the job at nationals!
-Every two weeks we will be working on one part of the game - making sure everyone knows our defense, offense, counter attack - etc. Monday's conditioning and drills Wed conditioning and scrimmage (stop and go) Saturdays: Clinic with club and 30 min scrimmage 30 min situation scrimmage 30 mins scrimmage.

I am pleased with our progress - and looking forward to helping everyone improve their game which in turns helps the entire team. Can't wait till next year's Nationals: they will be at Irvine June 8-10th... mark your calendars.

If you are ever approached from other teams wanting to come out and scrimmage us - tell them yes and I will get pool time!!

Master Festival

I want to thank everyone who worked the Festival!!! Our team got about $1,000 in water polo balls for our hard work this past weekend!!

Our girls: Alex, Sarah and Eliz did registration, worked the table and checked the players in for Lunch at the Fiesta. Laura helped on Friday. Jill was sick but came out on Sunday to help!! Tony Chanove also helped out at the desk!

Andrew, Jeff, Nabu, Nik, (Laura also helped) supervised our little one making sure we did not lose any balls or caps, they also helped out at the table.

Hunter, Skyler, Connor and Victor did a great job getting the balls and caps for all the team and then making sure we got everything back!!

John and Valerie Melia and Gabby sold T-shirts and refreshments.

Aniko (Adam's mom) made the awards and helped with the programs!

Mark Wasik made the programs!

Mark St John and Vaune Kadlebek taught at the clinic and coached teams.

Joe Pelia and Tere Ma ref the games (John Melia was going to but could not find white long pants and only had white shorts and we took a vote and decided we did not want to see white skinny legs on a cold day - so he shadowed Joe and Tere and will ref when he can find a pair of white long pants)!!!

The Arizona tournament will be held April 28-30th - they have almost doubled their entry fee and is only inviting 8 teams - we got an invitation. We will enter one "A" team only. I will send emails by mid Feb to players who are selected to attend the Arizona tournament. Then post on the blog. The cost will be about $80-90 per player, plus your own transportation, hotel, meals.

Fallbrook Results

Great weekend - with great games - awesome play. The club did great in the water, they also did a great job out of the water.... this team was on their best behavior, no problems. When they had time with no games they came back to the hotel and rested, when they were at the pool they always wanted to watch the games to learn.

Aniko and Valerie planned our trip - hotel, transportation, meals, snacks and everything ran like clock work!

Our little guys placed second in the tournament only losing to the 1st place team in the 1st round games and in the final game against Laguna Beach (this team took 2nd at the National Junior Olympic). Other teams we beat were: Rose Bowl, Chawp (Chino Hills Area Water Polo), Pacific.

The older group had a bad start - they were too nervous (had a few get sick and throw up before and after the game from nerves). They lost to Sultan and could have and should have beaten this team. We beat LAWPC - lost to El Toro by 1 goal and beat Rose Bowl in a pick up game.

All and all Mark and I were really happy with the way the team is progressing!!!!
