Workout Theme: Wk June 25th

Counter Attack: We will be working on Counter Attack - Offense and Defense!!!

Must know: Must do:
1. Know where the ball is at
2. Don't watch what is happening - THINK!!!! What is going to happen and react before it happens.
3. Know where the ball is at
4. Know where your team mates are - know where the defense is at
5. Last know where the ball is at!!!!

More on Counter Attack:
Counter Attack

- Anticipate the shot, the steal, and the bad passes and take off to offense or defense.
- To anticipate you must know where the ball is at – At all times!!!!!
- 1 on 0 if you are pass half way, turn on your back so the goalie can hit you on your hand.
- 1 on 0 if you are not past half way, stay on your stomach and look swim.
- The top must release – Left – pass to the right (right does not wing out, swim straight down). Right passes to the center that may be open or will take the foul at set.

LEFT – RIGHT – CENTER or LONG RIGHT – CENTER

Other Notes on Counter Attack:

-Always stay an offensive threat – you may become the free player.
-Know we are going to shoot the ball and come back defense.
-IF YOU ARE PRESSED WITH THE BALL MAKE THE PASS DON’T DRAW THE FOUL.
-Counter Attack: Goals: 1) Score 2) Get the ball down quickly for our set offense 3) Fatigue the other team 4) Counter each time, this will make the other team hesitant in their set offense 5) We must think about our Counter Attack as a game in it self: Which team will stop Countering first? We want to be the team that wins this part of the game!!! When they stop countering this gives us a time to rest for our next counter attack then “Game Over”

Friday - Red T-shirt Day

Let's wear red

If the Red shirt thing is new to you, read below...

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home. No, he responded. Heading out I asked? No. I'm escorting a soldier home. Going to pick him up? No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq, I'm taking him home to his family. The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do. Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign." Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do. Red Fridays. Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that .. every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

Eggbeater Kick

Here is an awesome link on the eggbeater kick. Please take note on the foot - the toes are not always pointed but flexed upward. When a player does not eggbeater correctly they can not improve their game - as your legs are the key to shooting and defense!!!! Again look at how the toes point upward towards the chin and when the leg comes back down the toes are pointed.

Master - Goals for Week 4/23

Goals - Rules - Plays for the week:

1. Do NOT just pass off and drive.... before you pass off and drive you have to have your defense on you ready to knock you down because they think you are going to shoot the ball. Once your man is on you, pass off to your weakside and drive.

2. This week we will not sprint at the beginning of the workout - we will sprint at the end. The # of sprints will depend on how many bad passes (this will become 1 sprint) - how many bad passes for assists (this will become 2 sprints), the short way. Max sprints per workout will be 30 and we will begin 15 mins before the end of the workout.

3. With this (above rule) hopefully everyone will not feel like the teams have to have shoot the ball every time!!! You can dump the ball.

4. When making a pass it is because the ball will be in a better position to score, get the ball to the open man, get the ball into set.

NO TURN OVERS!!!!!!!!

5. When your teammate makes a mistake - do not give them a dirty look (let me do that), do not yell at them (let me do that).... help them out (let me do that too).

Chawps Club - Older

I have entered the following in the Chawps tournament - May 20th (Sunday)
Jake - Matt - Ryan - Andrew - David - Ben - Baby - Eliz - Sarah - Alex (if she does not make it to state swimming) - Adam - Eric. The cost will be $35 per player. You must find your own ride to the Colony Pool in Ontario, snacks, food.

Good News - Bad News

Good News: Our younger team has been invited to play in the NIKE Tournament in Salem Oregon - June 22-24th. I just asked the coach if their players could house our players and if then come to Vegas we will house their players..... this will help cut down on every one's cost. I have looked into airfares, the cost of Vans, entry fees, food, we are looking at $450 per player.

I would like to know who can and can not attend by this weekend. We will leave on Wed or Thursday to do some sight seeing before the tournament. Parents: If money is a problem, please let your children go by themselves - Tony and I will take care of everyone!

Bad News: Our older group's attendance has not been good, not even average..... I have canceled the summer trip to Junior Olympics. When attendance picks up we will look at other tournaments.

Club & Masters Sat Workout

This Sat - March 24th everyone will workout together from 1-3 pm at Whitney Ranch.

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Masters - Sat March 17th

This Sat March 17th - can you come at 1:15 pm to help the club players. I would like to have small groups to teach - swimming with their head down and using the correct pull under the water. Also how to control the ball on the wings and how to make a pass under pressure (I don't want the players to learn how to draw a foul but learn how to pass - if they do this correctly the defense will foul them).

Would also like to break the older players into stations and work on the different positions:
Two meters - drivers - etc, after you work their legs!!!

Thanks - we will need anyone who can spare the time!!

Big Thanks Again to Rob Wills

Rob Wills has gotten our team a grant/funding from the Sheriff's Protective Association. With this Grant we are purchasing Team T-shirts for every player who has been on the club for at least 3 months. They are only asking in return we put "Sheriff's Protective Association" on our T-Shirts. Rob hopes this will be a quarterly grant of $600.00.

On another note - the money the team raised from driving the trucks at the Marathon is being given out for scholarships to players who cannot afford to attend tournaments. One player was given monies to help pay for the tournament.

Again Thank You Rob Wills for always taking care of the team!!! Such a great guy!!!

Masters - Arizona Hotel Info

This message is from Mo, the tournament director. See below:

Hey Gang - We have a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn secured at a special rate. March is a very busy month in AZ, so the rate is higher than last year, but better than you'll get with individual reservations. The Holiday Inn is located within walking distance of both pools and also offers an airport shuttle service. The sponsored social events will be held near the pools in Tempe, in walking and/or taxi rides from the Holiday Inn, so this is a great option to save money on rental cars and get home safe at night. Holiday Inn State University 915 E Apache Blvd Tempe AZ 85281 In order to secure the special rate of $139.99/night (2 double beds per room), please call 800-553-1826. Rooms sold out very quickly last year, I'd advise to secure your reservation quickly. Thanks! :)Mo

WHEN MAKING THE RESERVATIONS - PLEASE LET THEM KNOW THIS IS FOR THE ASU WATER POLO TOURNAMENT

UNLV Road Work

For anyone utilizing Harmon Avenue in your daily commute or activities, the Clark County Public Works division has posted Harmon Avenue to be closed at Paradise Road Monday February 5, 2007 through Thursday February 8, 2007. Please plan accordingly.Parking Services895-1300

I am not sure if this will matter to us - if you can't get in the parking lot: go on Flamingo and you will have to turn into a drive way and find your way to the soccer field - then out to the tennis court - then to the pool.

Plan on a few extra time....

Dress Warm

Parents please make sure your child dresses warm coming, going to workout and games. About 50% of the players who went to Fallbrook are sick - they can not wear slippers with socks walking in wet grass - or after workout and they are wearing short, no jacket. I know they are hot after working out and don't want to dress warm but they need to or they will and are getting sick.

Thanks - Sandy -Tony

Fallbrook Results

It was a weekend filled with water polo games, eating, water polo games, eating and more water polo games. It was as much fun watching the parents smiling and watching their child doing so well. Results:
-10 & Under Coed - won 2 games and lost 2 games - finished 2nd (4 teams)
-12 & Under Coed - won 2 games and lost 2 games - finshed 3rd (9 teams)
-16 Boys - won 4 games and lost 1 game - finished 4th (24 teams)

10 & Under Highlight: watching the progress of our brand new players! McCarthy getting in the cold water on Sunday (thanks to Zeek's comment "Suck it up like a MAN")
12 & Under Highlight: Beating Commerce and advancing 1st in our bracket - watching Mary - Eleanor and Max step up and taking care of the newer players.
16 & Under Boys (with 3 girls and one 13 year old boy) This group of players came to Fallbrook to play water polo, they took care of business and at the same time they had fun and did not need much supervision.

As most of you already know I truly believe in Defense!!! Players who play great defense don't usually get the attention the players who score goals - I would like everyone to know what a great job Andrew did fronting two meters which turned into over 75% of our goals, kick outs, shot attempts because the other teams could not get the ball to even begin their offense started. So almost every goal everyone scored on a counter attack remember it started with Andrew's two meter defense.

I also want to Thank the parents who drove to support the team and help when needed. So "Thank You Very Much"

Another big Thanks to Tony for taking over for coaching duties for Mark these past 4 months. Tony great job coaching this weekend - I know he is very proud of how all the teams did this weekend.

Everyone loves to win - everyone loves to have a fun time - we did it all this weekend!!!

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year ! !
Let's start this year off on the right foot - here are things we as a team need to improve on:
1. Let's pat your teammates on the back when they do something good in the water.
2. Let's encourage our teammates when they are down, when they are not working as hard as they should be working.
3. Let's show team spirit when we play - (something like Edwin does at each and every practice).
4. Let's pay dues on time - beginning this year you are late, you don't workout!!
Club: On Thursday we are starting off with 20 sprints - if you bring in a type written New Year's Resolution you get to skip 15 of the 20 sprints. Your resolution should be the one most important thing you need to work on for Water Polo.
Be Safe!!!!!

Does anyone want to order Parka's? The price range is: $125 - 155.00. I know we won't be able to get in time for xmas. Please respond to this blog if you would like to order one.... If we have more than 12 parkas it will be cheaper. The XXL cost more. You can also get short parkas.

Blood Bath Game

NBC will air an interview about the Blood Bath Game in 1956 tomorrow Wed Dev 6th at 4 pm (short slot) and at 5 pm (longer slot). It's a small world: My (Sandy) 1st water polo coach was Nick Martin (he changed his name) - Nick was the team captain from Hungary, his entire Olympic team played Russia for the Gold Medal - this was during the time Russia took over Hungary so the game meant so much to Hungary. After the game all the players defected! In 1977 Jeno Ats also a member of this Olympic team was the Executive Director for Water Polo Canada. Jeno invited my club team from Commerce to play in an International tournament for women. When we came home the City Council from Commerce asked me to invite teams from around the world and the City would host every team. This is how Women's Water Polo got started - which is now an Olympic Sport. Now Jeno lives in Las Vegas and Adam's mom friend is Tom from ABC News and did a story on the 50th anniversity of this Blood Bath! Small World huh?
