Report - Girls sleep over
So far they have eaten lunch - dinner - after workout dinner - cookies - sodas - puffs - candy. They have watched two movies and are now on their 3rd movie. We also talked about what happened at Commerce - how things could have been done better. Everyone seems to understand what it means to become a good teammate. They are having fun.... They are putting make up on - doing their nails - doing each others hair...
Tonight I asked Jake and Max to come over later and scary the girls... Jake did not come over but Max came over....I left the back door open and told Max to come thru the side of the house and come thru back door. Max had a white nylon stocking over his head, the lights were turned very very low and I was talking to the girls and then Max came in and started yelling!!! I told Mia before so she would not be scared and I would not have to take her home.... she was still scared. The funniest was Sarah, she was screaming (all of the girls were) she jumped off the black chair and was laying on the floor with her face down and screaming and screaming!!! All the screams went on for a good 30seconds... even after they knew it was Max. Molly was laying on a bean bag and she just sat their screaming and banging her heels on the floor - See the next picture. Kacy, Maci, Santana and Al were all jumping all over each other... Mia was under her sleeping bag (AND SHE KNEW IT WAS COMING AND IT WAS MAX)... El and Gabby screamed and kinda got up and moved away but they knew it was Max within seconds. Hannah who was the closest to Max just sat in the black chair scramming and looking at Max. It is 30 mins later and I am still laughing!!

A Must Read
This info comes from the Olympic Magazine:
Some of the most talented athletes never make it!
“Mindset”
Coaches are often frustrated and puzzled. They look back over their careers and realize that some of their most talented athletes—athletes who seemed to have everything-- never achieved success. Why? The answer is that these athletes didn’t have everything. They didn’t have the right mindset.
The Mindset Rules
The two mindsets work by creating entire psychological worlds, and each world operates by different rules.
Rule #1.
In a fixed mindset the cardinal rule is: Look talented at all costs. In a growth mindset, the cardinal rule is: Learn, learn, learn!
Rule #2.
In a fixed mindset, the second rule is: Don’t work too hard or practice too much. In a growth mindset, the rule is: Work with passion and dedication—effort is the key.
Rule #3.
In a fixed mindset, the third rule is: When faced with setbacks, run away or conceal your deficiencies. In a growth mindset, the rule is: Embrace your mistakes and confront your deficiencies.

Results from Commerce
What a great weekend of water polo - everyone got 6 games (and 3 players got 8 games) in two days. Quick Recap of each team:
10's - It was Whitney's 30th birthday on Sat and her 10's won all three games - Happy Birthday Whitney. They played awesome great defense and all the players came home with a medal and team trophy. Great Job Team Vegas/Henderson: Sam, Maci, Mia, Chole, Sarah, Molly, McCarthy, Laura, Gage and Ben.
12's - Finished in 10th place - I was able to get to Commerce for one of their games and they played very well - great defense!!! I got to watch at least one game in every division and the 12's defense was by far the best front and lane defense. Good job: Steven, Al, Sky, Dale, Joey, Andre, Hannah, Noah, Lake and Wyatt.
14's - This our team with most of the new players - with each game they improved and gain confidence in their abilities. What they learn this weekend they are going to take it back to workout and work hard. Great Job: Noland, Derek, Nik, Santana, Casey, Parker, Nate and Jarrod.
16's - Usually in this division our teams do not place very high because the teams from California have sooo many more games under their belt then we do - this time was different. We place 8th of 24 teams - more important our team played the winner of the tournament and was the only team to keep them under 6 goals and lost by the smallest difference 4. Good Job: Ryan, Josh, Dr Phil, Ben, Zach, Mary, Adam, Murphy, Ashton and Brendan.
The following players were selected on the All Tournament Team (player you should keep a log on all your water polo honors. You will need this info when filling out college applications). Congrat's to all of our players who made the All Tournament Team!!!
16's: Max Taylor
14's: Nate Peercy
12's: Dale Corey
10;s: 1st Team: McCarthy
2nd Team: Gage
Hon Men: Sammy

Reminder to Parents
Reminder of our Parents Guidelines - it is nature for every parent want their child to be the best and to do this parents must understand our coaching staff is highly qualified to help your child to reach their potential. Tony, Louie, Mark, Robert and Whitney have years and years of experience in the sport. As a reminder I have posted the Guidelines for Parents again. Thank you all for supporting the team by getting your child to and from workouts and tournaments. For working the tournaments, Festivals, camps, fund raising and just being their for the entire club.
Parents Guidelines
Team Vegas/Henderson Water Polo
Parent Guidelines
In order for our club to compete successfully at the highest level, it is
essential to recognize that participation in the Team Vegas/Henderson is a
commitment being made by entire families, not just players. Therefore, it is
important that we outline our expectations for parents as well as players.
Please read the following guidelines that we expect our parents to follow.
1. Parents are allowed to attend practices and encouraged to attend games.
However, parents are expected to stay away from the side of the pool and
away from the coaches during practices and games.
2. Parents should support the players on our teams and refrain from making
disparaging remarks about or directed at any of our players, coaches,
opponents, or officials. Parents must avoid any physical or verbal
confrontations with the parents, coaches, and players of our club or our
opponents or with the officials.
3. Parents are not coaches; the players should receive their directions only
from the coaching staff on the pool deck, not from parents in the stands. The
coaching staff is giving directions which will enhance the entire team (not
just one child). Parents cheer for the team/players and don't yell out any
directions.
4. Parents are expected to have rides available for their children at the time
that practices and games are scheduled. Parents need to understand that
part of the mission of the coaches is to help the players develop into mature,
responsible young men and women. Therefore, it is the responsibility of
players to communicate directly with coaches when issues arise.
5. Decisions about playing time, travel teams, and all other water polo related
matters are made exclusively by the coaching staff and are not open to
debate, discussion, or negotiation with parents. A player should feel free to
discuss his/her status with the coaches at an appropriate time.
6. Parents are expected to get their children to all practices and games on
time. If you cannot be on time, be early!
7. No player will be allowed to participate in any practice or game unless
he/she is registered with the club. All club dues must be paid in full in order
for a player to be allowed to enter the water.

New Pool
Just took a tour at the new Indoor Pool - Heritage Pool. Pretty awesome! it is a 14 lane pool 25 yards by 40 mts. - 10 lanes are all deep - next two lanes a little slope (but still deep)and the last 2 lanes are going to be used for walking lanes.
They are putting in a scoreboard for swimming, diving, syncro and water polo. Not sure if they got us floating cages or stand up cages. They will have storage for our equip, a classroom, a dry board on wheels and I am putting in another request for portable shot clocks.
The Pool will be opened early Feb and we will begin our Water Polo Conditioning class. Times and days will be announced soon. If the pool is ready we will move the Master Festival to Heritage Pool.
This pool is off the 95 - get off at Horizon and go left - go past Boulder Hwy and the pool will be on your left side.

Speedo Cup
What a great weekend of water polo! All the players came ready to play and experienced the competition level we strive for. We had games every day and each game we accomplished our goal or learned something from the game before and not repeating our mistakes and taking advantage of the other teams mistakes.
From the Canham Pool to the "M Den"(Michigan Gift Shop) to Jimmy John's(Best Sandwiches) to the Big House(Michigan Stadium), I don't think I ever saw a player not smiling and not having fun the whole trip.
Players - Very good and behaving and dedicating this weekend to learning and participating in as much polo as you could. Great focus in and out of the water, and especially all the questions you all asked. Also, GREAT job on getting to know and make your 6 new teammates feel welcome all weekend.
Congratulations to Max Taylor on being honored with the "Jody Campbell Award". His determination, energy, and team attitude allowed him to achieve this prestigious award given to the most outstanding players of the Speedo Cup.
Parents - THANK YOU! For keeping the kids in line and all your support. From planning team dinners, getting water to the players and coaches during games, finding places to visit and places to eat, to reminding me to take pictures at every possible moment! The kids felt like rockstars with all the cameras and film around them. Even though they gave you all a hard time during team pic time and always being told to smile, they will thank you for the memories. Thank you again for coming along and supporting the players and the team.

Team Items
Did anyone accidentally pick up a TVH Towel at Tuesday's workout?
Also we want to know if anyone has a parka that is too small and wants to sell that parka to a teammate. If so let me know and I will post it on this blog.
We are getting a new set of caps from Monster Polo, just like our new team suits. Anyone who loses their cap, rips, destroys the cap you will have to pay for the replacement at $30 for each cap. So take care of them, don't be ripping them off your head, don't bite the strings, don't throw the caps (they will scratch the ear guards). Take care of them or PAY for them!!!

Few Pic's from U of A tournament
#6 on Kaos kicked Dandy in the head - result great Halloween get up and Louie our team protector cut #6's lip on a 6 on 5 goal scored follow thru (with the assist by Max).
Thor showing off his new Team Vegas Suit - need I say more?
Picture we don't have yet is Damon with his staples in his head when Solano Beach player got his head and kneed him in the head while the ref watched.
We really did have fun!!!!

University of Arizona
As Edwin put it early in the week on his Facebook: We are off to defend our title. Well, we did it!! 5-0
Game 1 vs Kaos 20's we beat them 15-11 but one player gave us tons of problem with his offensive drives. Our counter attack was great!!
Game 1 vs Old Pueblo (players from New Mexico and ASU) pretty easy game 15-2
Our 3rd game of the day was against U of A "B" team we won 14-5.
This put us 1st in our Bracket and had to cross over and play 2nd in the other bracket - Solano Beach (Carsbad) we were up most of the game and at the end of the game we almost gave them the game but pulled a rabbit out of the hat and won by 1 goal 11-10.
This win put us in the Gold Game and we thought it would be against U of A "A" but Kaos 20 beat them so we were in the Gold Game vs Kaos 20. Kaos 20 was the same team from the 1st game they got another goalie from another team we think it was the New Mexico Goalie, the picked up 3-4 other top players from other team in the tournament. It was very upsetting but pulled out the win in double overtime sudden death!!! Everyone played grat a true team effort!!!
Every game except the game against Solano (Carsbad) we played great - did not take any shot just because we were free, no turnovers... which meant they other team did not get counter off us. We looked a very good team out there...no rookie mistakes.
Congrats to: Our goalies were outstanding - Rob and Marcus. Two Meters: Tony, Thor and Dandy (Louie too). Our two meter defenders: Adrain, Tony, Damon ..Damon did not get to play with us in the final game, he was at the Hospital getting 6 staples in his head when on the of the Solano guys grabbed his head and his knee to Damon's head. In the 1st game vs Kaos Dandy got kicked to the head by #6, and Louie took care of #6 and cut his lip on a follow thru goal on man up, which Max made the assist. Our Attackers were aw some: Jacint played as good if not better then he does in workouts!!!! Yeah!!! Edwin had a goals along with some awesome assists. Robert played great, posting up when need, making some good outside shot. Max did very good up on many counters made few goals and learn tons!!
This tournament was more of a win because we improved on the things we have been stressing in workouts: - no turn overs, not trying to make the hot dog assist, not taking a shot just because we could but working the a shot because there was an opening because we created the defense out of position.
Thor hosted the BBQ again - I will post a special picture of Thor later. And a few other pictures.
Great job Guys!!!!!

Defense
General Rules:
If you don’t play defense you don’t play!!! Everyone plays 110% on defense!! If you make bad passes get your towel and sit on the bench!!! Play smart – Play a team game!!
Progression of
Our Team Defense
1. If the entire team is pretty weak or the team does not have a counter attack, not very fast or out of shape.
We will press everywhere!!! Press the ball!! No player on the other team gets to make an easy pass – they must be pressed.
-When you press and we (coaches or teammates) are telling you to “Let them pass” this means – press and turn them out so they cannot look at who they are passing the ball to. When they put their hand on the ball: NO FOUL. When they turn on their back: NO FOUL When they begin to move their arm for the pass hit their arm/elbow… forcing them to pass under pressure. Because:
We will be in passing lanes. The further away you are from the ball the more you can cheat up in a lane. If some makes a mistake and fouls – drop back somewhere between a lane and between your man and the goal. If you make a mistake and foul do not drop back to help but get ready to press again.
We must front two meters – between the ball and your man!! We must also front the deep wings… if there is a foul on the deep wings and we are fronting at two meters – the other deep wing defender must look to help the backdoor.
Now if a team is smart and they hear us saying NO Foul, let em pass and they can’t get the passes off – THEY WILL try to turn you. You must stay on their left shoulder!!! Do not get there after the turn – you must be there so they turn into you. If they turn the other direction and get a jump on you – you MUST counter spin and swim – do NOT get on their back!!! SWIM!!!
Our defense becomes our offense and we are up on Counters.
2. If the team has a good set that can get around our front:
We will try to match up our defenders and stay to the left shoulder.
3. If the have an awesome set and we are getting tooled and schooled at two meters we will:
1. In and Out
2. Look to Help
3. Dead Drop
4. If the set moves to mid cage or further to the strong side, we will:
“M” Defense
Counter Attacks
1. If you are up look swim back for the ball from the goalie.
2. If you are up and pass half tank – get on your back so the goalie can pass the ball on your hand – You must also know if the goalie is coming out.
3. If you one of the 1st players down and not up you MUST release for the ball!!! We want the ball to lead the counter attack!!! Would like the 1st release to be left- then look right (right swim about 3 lanes from the wall – stay out of dummy land) and we should be up in the center if we easily gross and go on the set.
4. When making a release do not sit and wait for the ball – you must either be swimming and release out – or swim back to the goalie.
5. If we are up 2 on 1 everyone come back defense. Don’t watch us take shots – go defense when you think we are going to shoot the ball.
6. Counter Attack – if your man is on you and we don’t need you to release – stunt them down the pool. Stunt them when you are on defense too.

ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!
On Tuesdays workout at the Multi Gen a player came to workout that was not feeling well. Wednesday this players symptoms got worse and by Thursday this player was seen by a doctor and was diagnosed with "swine flu"
There is nothing to panic or worry about. As the doctors say this strain of flu is LESS severe than the "regular flu."
This post was not meant to scare you but to inform you. Doctors have advised that if you or your child show any symptoms such as fever or body-aches you must be aware that there is a slight chance they need to be seen by a doctor.
Workouts will continue as normal until noticed otherwise. If you feel any symptoms of being sick or not feeling well please refrain from coming to workout and if conditions worsen see a medical professional.
Again, don't panic

SPECIAL THANKS
HEY GANG I HAVE HAD A WEEK TO THINK ABOUT WHAT TRANSPIRED LAST WEEK AND THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IS WOW!
WOW, I TURNED 40 YEARS OLD. WOW, WE HOSTED ONE OF OUR BEST TOURNAMENTS EVER. WOW, WE HAVE THE BEST PARENTS AND PLAYER PARTICIPATION EVER.
PARENTS, A SPECIAL THANKS FOR HELPING HOST A GREAT TOURNAMENT. FROM THE SCORE TABLES, THE CONCESSION STAND AND SHIRT TABLE. YOU GUYS MADE THIS EXPERIENCE A GREAT ONE, NOT ONLY FOR US COACHES BUT FOR ALL THE PLAYERS THAT ATTENDED THIS TOURNAMENT. I THINK JEN LEADERS SUMMED IT UP THE BEST WHEN SHE OVERHEARD A COUPLE OF PLAYERS AND COACHES COMMENT ON HOW ORGANIZED AND SMOOTH THIS TOURNAMENT WAS. THEY COULDN'T WAIT TO SIGN UP FOR NEXT YEAR. SHE TOLD ME, IT MADE HER FEEL PROUD TO HAVE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. I HOPE ALL PARENTS FEEL AS PROUD AS JEN BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT. GREAT JOB PARENTS!
KIDS, YOU CAN REALLY MAKE A COACH WONDER WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO. WELL I GUESS I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE OF YOU ALL. I TRULY LIVE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH EACH OF YOU KIDS. YOUR SUCCESS & YOUR FAILURES, I TRULY FEEL ALL OF THEM. I TRULY APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COACH EVERYONE OF YOU KIDS. YOU MAKE MY LIFE THAT MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE, YOU MAY NOT SEE IT EVERY TIME I AM COACHING YOU BUT IT IS THERE. YOU KIDS GAVE ME THE BEST GIFT A COACH LIKE ME WILL EVER GET. YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR FEELINGS ON PAPER ATTACHED WITH YOUR PICTURES. THANK YOU KIDS IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME.
THANK YOU TO MY TEAMMATES AND ALL THE PARENTS THAT WISHED ME A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. YOU ALL MADE MY DAY VERY SPECIAL.
TRISH & MAT TAYLOR, I CANT SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH. TRISH A SPECIAL THANKS TO YOU BECAUSE A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME YOU HAD A LOT TO DO WITH ORGANIZING MY SPECIAL GIFT FROM THE KIDS. ON TOP OF IT ALL YOU MADE THE TIME TO DO THAT FOR ME. I WILL NEVER FORGET IT, THANKS.

Great Weekend - Team Vegas/Henderson
What a great weekend of water polo - Tony's Birthday - Wendy's Birthday - Diana's Birthday.
Everyone did such a great job - I know I will miss someone so sorry now!! Thank You Very Much:
Matt Taylor for taking on the job of Tournament Manager!!! Mark St John for getting the clocks to work. Tony - Matt - Rob - Robert for helping Mark. Louie C - Rob - Tony - Matt - for getting the goal backing up. Collen for our drinks and snacks (all all her helper) Jen for selling t-shirts, suits and all Jen's help. Everyone who worked the table - I saw John and Corey working the table a lot! Trish getting all the kids and table set with workers. I know I missed tons of parents, players who helped this weekend... go ahead and list them under comments.
Younger club players this is the 1st time I did not have to get down on any of you for not doing your job - for this I am very thankful.... and most of all very proud of our team!! The Pool staff was also awesome... funny thing happened during one of our games - the lifeguard asked us during the game "Where are you guys from" Louie said we came all the way from Henderson!!
If you have pictures you want me to post on the blog sent them to me!! If I missed anyone write under comments on who else did what - as most of you know when I get in my game mode....I only see water polo games, that polo zone...and may not even see you walk by or say hello...
