The week both club and Masters will be working on defending Two Meters. Here are a few pointers to think about before we work on this skill in the water.
1. Hips Up - so the 2mt can not grab your suit, if they try to grab your suit when your hips are up the ref will be able to see their arm/hands on the surface and call a turn over.
2. Defending a right handed set: stay to the left should - the set will want to turn inside water and will do so turning to their left (they are right handed and right footed and will have to step across their body).
3. When the ball comes in and the set reaches for the ball - do not reach!! Reaching to get the ball with your right hand will turn your body/shoulder and allow the set to turn inside water.
4. If they back hand - hold your hand open and block (don't grab the arm) BLOCK the arm. Smart sets will begin to backhand and when you reach and turn your shoulder they will come back around and sweep or turn inside water.
5. If you have a crash (crash when a player from the top - weak flat comes back to help steal the ball) use your legs and upper chest to push the set into the crash.
6. Many times a set will put their head under water... when they do this put your hands up - esp if we have a crash. Be careful with two hands up, if they get the ball and turn to shoot drop your right hand and push/hold their body and with the left hand block the shot/ball.
7. MOST IMPORTANT!!!!! Know where the ball is at coming down on the counter attack and front (stay between your man and the ball). We will work on fronting - stay fronting - getting around - KNOW WHERE THE BALL IS AT - Asking for help on your back doors.
