Debbie Watson is the 1st female water polo player to be in the International Hall of Fame. Debbie was a great player, worked hard, always working to improve her game and she loved the game!! I asked Debbie to write to you and tell you just some of the opportunities you have ahead of you. Debbie has included her email address if you have any questions.
Hi Sandy,
It is great to hear from you and I'm impressed you have a whole new bunch of juniors ready and willing to play.
Wow, I don't really know where to start except to say that water polo is a brilliant game - which I'm sure the kids have already worked out and there are many reasons why I played for so long. The friendship, the challenge, the travel, the game - and not necessarily in that order!
I remember many a car journey to play games and I think sometimes we had as much fun in the car as we did in the pool. I recall one road trip which was post the 1984 World FINA Cup, we travelled from Orange County to Las Vegas.
We had many laughs along the way and we had a brilliant time in Vegas! Australia and the USA have had an amazing rivalry right throughout the history of Women's Water Polo. I am honoured to have been a part of that journey.
The Beijing Olympics will be another chapter and I am very lucky to be going as an employee of Australia's media team where I will be commentating on the women's polo.
There are so many opportunities that come your way when you put in your best effort and you remain focused and dedicated to your dream.
I am very happy to answer any questions the kids may have.
All I can say is enjoy what you do and aspire to be the best person you can be.
Have a great road trip, enjoy the polo and enjoy the experience.
take care deb xo
